Abstract: Over the past decade, Online Dispute Resolution has moved beyond its original use, which was primarily for e-commerce disputes. The rise of Online Dispute Resolution has meant the incorporation of a wide range of technological tools into the field of dispute resolution. Among them is the use of the Artificial Intelligence (AI). Until now AI has been used mainly to allow legal professionals (lawyers, mediators) to better perform their tasks. However, every day more and more jurisdictions are incorporating machines using AI tools as part of the modernization of the judicial system. AI has a great potential to promote efficiency of judicial Systems, revealing its ability to help allowing to build truly useful intelligent-user centric Online Dispute Resolution systems incorporating assessment and diagnose tools. There is also a separate project to create a robot judge. This paper examines the use of AI in the justice field and investigates how AI can be better used to construct such systems and how we can ethically govern their use to guarantee the rule of law.
